About this product

Two chocolates in one bar: creamy Milka Alpine milk chocolate with playful white chocolate spots that look like the coat of a dairy cow.

Milka Happy Cow is a milk chocolate tablet with patches of white chocolate set right into the surface, so every square shows a different spot. In Germany the same bar sits on store shelves as Milka Kuhflecken, which simply means "cow spots."

The base is Milka's classic Alpine milk chocolate, made with 100% Alpine milk. The white chocolate makes up about 16% of the bar and adds a softer, vanilla-like sweetness. A little hazelnut paste in the recipe rounds out the flavor.

It is made in Germany by Mondelez International, the company behind the Milka brand. Malincho sells it in the USA as an independent retailer.

Taste and serving ideas

How it tastes

Expect the gentle, milky sweetness Milka is known for, with a smooth melt and no bitterness. The white chocolate spots are creamier and slightly sweeter than the surrounding milk chocolate, so a single square tastes a little different depending on where you break it.

Ways to enjoy it

Kids love finding the spots, which makes it a favorite for lunchboxes, Easter baskets and birthday treat bags. It also works as a quick dessert next to coffee or a glass of cold milk.

For baking, chop it into cookie dough or melt it over pancakes. The two colors stay visible when only partly melted.

Why Milka chocolate is different

Milka started in Switzerland in 1901, and its name comes from the German words for milk (Milch) and cocoa (Kakao). The purple wrapper and the lilac cow have been part of the brand for more than a century.

Milka sources its cocoa through Cocoa Life, Mondelez's program that works with cocoa-farming communities.

Gift idea: pair Happy Cow with a plain Alpine Milk bar and a White Chocolate bar for a three-bar Milka tasting set.

Questions and answers

Is Milka Happy Cow the same as Milka Kuhflecken?

Yes. Kuhflecken is the German name for the same cow-spotted bar.

What is the white part made of?

It is white chocolate, made from cocoa butter, milk and sugar. It makes up about 16% of the bar.

Does it contain nuts?

Yes. The recipe includes hazelnut paste, and it may contain traces of other tree nuts and wheat. It also contains milk and soy.

How many calories are in a serving?

About 97 calories per 3-piece (18g) serving, based on the European label.

Is it gluten free?

Gluten is not an ingredient, but the bar may contain traces of wheat, so it is not recommended for anyone who must avoid gluten.

Where is it made?

In Germany. Malincho, an independent retailer, ships it across the USA from New Jersey.

How should I store it?

Keep it somewhere cool and dry, away from heat. In hot weather, a cool pantry is better than the fridge, which can cause a white bloom on the surface.
