About this product

Soft sponge cakes topped with a layer of raspberry-flavored jelly and finished with Milka Alpine milk chocolate. A Milka take on the classic European Jaffa cake.

Each cake is built in three layers: a thin, soft sponge base, a disc of raspberry-flavored jelly, and a coating of milk chocolate made with Alpine milk. The jelly is the biggest part of the cake at about 52%, while the chocolate makes up about 15%.

The cakes come in a 147g tray. Jaffa cakes are a popular cookie-aisle treat across Europe, and Milka's version is a common sight on store shelves in Central and Eastern Europe.

It is made by Mondelez International, the company behind Milka. Malincho sells it in the USA as an independent retailer.

Taste and serving ideas

How it tastes

The sponge is light and a little springy. The jelly is sweet with a bright, slightly tart raspberry note, and the thin milk chocolate layer adds a creamy finish. Compared with a chocolate bar, it is much lighter, with far less fat per bite.

Ways to enjoy it

Serve a few on a plate with coffee or black tea when guests drop by. They also travel well in a lunchbox or picnic bag on a cool day.

For a quick dessert, set two cakes next to a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a spoonful of whipped cream and a few fresh raspberries.

What makes it different

Most Milka products are solid or filled chocolate. Choco Jaffa is a soft cake instead, so it sits closer to a pastry than a candy. The raspberry jelly brings a fruity, slightly sour contrast that you will not find in Milka's chocolate bars.

Serving tip: leave the tray at room temperature for a while before serving. The chocolate tastes creamier and the jelly turns softer than straight from a cold pantry.

Questions and answers

What is a Jaffa cake?

It is a small round cake with a sponge base, a layer of fruit jelly and a chocolate top. Milka's version uses raspberry jelly and Alpine milk chocolate.

What allergens does it contain?

It contains wheat (gluten), eggs, milk, soy and hazelnuts.

Is it vegetarian?

It is colored with carmine (E120), which is made from insects, so it is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans.

Is it gluten free?

No. The sponge is made with wheat flour.

How many calories does it have?

The European label gives 357 kcal per 100g, which is much lower than a typical chocolate bar.

How should I store it?

Keep the tray closed in a cool, dry place, away from heat and humidity, so the sponge stays soft and the chocolate stays firm.
